Yes, full-time students can also work. Most classes are in the evening, so many work during the day and then come to class after work. This is more feasible during the first year of the program before the practicum begins.

In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, graduates of a Mental Health Counseling program must accrue at least 3,360 total hours of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in mental health counseling with an approved supervisor prior to applying for an LMHC license. See the

The dual degree program can take anywhere between 3-4 years to complete, depending on the full-time or part-time status of a student. The dual degree program we offer with the MHC program is the M.A. in Theology & Ministry.

Applicants interested in Urban Scholars or the Integrated Behavioral Health track must make this selection at the time of their application. Students who are admitted to the MHC Main Curriculum track will be able to choose one of the following concentrations if they desire after enrollment:

• Trauma Stress Studies & Intervention Responses

No. Since the IBH track uses 4 out of your 5 electives, it is not possible to also complete any other concentration.聽

Yes. Either the main track or IBH track would be a potential fit, but the IBH track would be particularly helpful since it will prepare you with the interprofessional skills needed in a hospital setting.聽

If you pursue the IBH, Urban Scholars, or Dual Degree tracks, you will not be able to complete a concentration.

Yes, our Dual Degree in Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling is a separate degree program.

Absolutely! The MHC Urban Scholars program is geared towards social justice-oriented practice for people living in urban areas with a variety of life circumstances. It can be thought of as an approach to practice in public as well as in private practice settings.

We strongly recommend submitting the application and all required materials by the priority deadline. Applications submitted after the priority deadline (in the rolling admission period) will be reviewed on a space-available basis only. Rolling period applicants may not receive admissions decisions on the typical timeline.

Yes, we allow admitted students to defer admission for one year. The deferral option requires payment of the $250 enrollment deposit.

No, the program does not currently conduct interviews.聽

Applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree in psychology should have completed at least 2 of the following foundational psychology courses:聽

• General Psychology
• Personality Theories
• Abnormal Psychology
• Developmental Psychology

Highly-qualified applicants who have not yet met this criteria may be conditionally admitted with a requirement that the courses be completed before the program begins. Prerequisite courses must be taken for credit at an accredited college or university.

No. In this case, it is important to apply for the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology program by the December 1st deadline. Within the application, there will be an option to request consideration for the master鈥檚 program if you are not admitted to the PhD. It is not necessary to submit two separate applications.

Yes. Admission to the Urban Scholars and Integrated Behavioral Health cohorts is competitive. Applicants who are not selected for the special cohort will still be considered for admission to the program鈥檚 general track.

Yes, it is possible to take non-degree courses at the Lynch School. Non-degree students may take up to four courses that could be counted toward a degree program later. In practice, this program鈥檚 classes are often fully enrolled, and priority is given to degree-seeking students. Please reach out to gsoe@bc.edu for more information on non-degree study. Transcripts for non-degree coursework would be evaluated in the same way as any other academic experience during the application process.

Students admitted to the IBH or General track of the program will be considered for the Dean鈥檚 Scholarship - a partial tuition scholarship that typically covers between 20 and 50% of tuition costs when awarded.

Students admitted to the Urban Scholars track of the program will be awarded a scholarship covering between 50 and 75% of tuition costs.聽

Students generally combine any scholarship awards they receive with personal savings, earnings from employment or assistantship, and student loans in order to fund their study.聽

It is not required for you to state this in your personal statement, but you are welcome to share your plan to meet those requirements.

It varies from year to year, but admissions decision release typically begins in mid-February and continues into the spring.

No, there are no differences in admissions requirements for the 48 vs. 60-credit tracks. Students are not asked to choose between these two tracks during the admissions process.

Our program is accredited by MPCAC.

CACREP offers accreditation to counseling programs at the master鈥檚 and doctoral levels, while MPCAC only offers accreditation to programs at the master鈥檚 level. CACREP鈥檚 accreditation standards are designed to ensure that master鈥檚 in counseling program graduates are prepared for professional licensure and/or certification in their field of practice. MPCAC鈥檚 more broadly stated mission is to ensure that programs 鈥渆ducate students in the science-based practice of counseling and psychological services.鈥� In practical terms, this means that MPCAC accredits certain types of master鈥檚 in psychology programs that are not designed to prepare students for LPC licensure and that would not be accredited by CACREP, such as master鈥檚 in counseling psychology programs. MPCAC-accredited master鈥檚 in clinical and mental health counseling programs generally meet academic training standards for LPC licensure. However, MPCAC also accredits non-clinical counseling master鈥檚 programs that are not designed to prepare students for LPC licensure. While most states recognize and some now require CACREP accreditation for counseling licensure, MPCAC accreditation is newer and not currently included in state licensing board standards.聽

The practicum consists of not less than 100 total hours, 40 direct service hours, and 25 hours of supervision. Once the practicum is completed, students immediately begin the internship. The internship consists of not less than 600 total hours, including 240 direct service hours and 45 supervision hours. The actual total practicum and internship hours may range between 700 and 900, depending upon the rate at which direct service and supervision hours can be accrued in a particular clinical setting.聽

Here are some examples of careers our recent graduates are following: mental health counselor, behavioral health support specialist, case manager, licensed professional counselor, school-based mental health therapist, outpatient therapist, in-home therapist, and emergency services clinician. About 10-15% of our students pursue a doctoral degree immediately following graduation.聽
