Celebrating the Work of Our Inaugural Poet Laureate, Jesse Julian!

As the semester draws to a close, we celebrate the upcoming graduation of our inaugural Poet Laureate, Jesse Julian. Since joining the Schiller Institute during her freshman year, Jesse has helped bring our mission of integrating the humanities with the sciences to life. Throughout her four-year tenure, Jesse has authored original poems that capture the Institute鈥檚 research, such as "Homestretch," inspired by interim Seidner Family Executive Director Dunwei Wang鈥檚 sustainability research and ethos, and "Of Laudato Si鈥," which echoes Pope Francis鈥檚 call for environmental justice. Beyond her own creative writing, Jesse has been a cornerstone of our student newsletter,听The Scoop. Her insightful poetry analysis has explored the work of writers like听Derek Sheffield听and听Amanda Gorman, helping our community see the ecopoetic connections between humanity and the natural world. This spring semester, she also spearheaded two events using poetry as a means to explore our core research areas of energy, environment, and health.听听

The Sustainability-Energy-Climate Nexus: Integrated Science and Society (SCHI4020/6020)

Thursdays, 3:00-4:30pm in 245 Beacon Street, room 215

As one of the defining issues of our time, climate change touches every thread of the social fabricate. Also, what we choose to do (or not to do) has long-lasting implications for many generations to come. This interdisciplinary course, to be co-taught by three core faculty members of the Schiller Institute, focuses on the intersection of sustainable growth, renewable energy and climate science. Designed for graduate students as well as junior/senior undergraduate students in STEM, the course aims to provide a comprehensive, yet in-depth overview of the complex interrelationships between these key areas and how they may interact to shape the future of our planet. (Interested non-STEM students are encouraged to reach out to the instructors about course requirements.)
