In recognition of a family gift from The Telemachus and Irene Demoulas Family Foundation, Boston College has dedicated the Stokes Hall atrium space as “Demoulas Commons.”

Demoulas family members attended the naming event on March 3, including Telemachus (“Mike”) and Irene’s children Arthur T. Demoulas P’12, ’18, ’20; Glorianne Demoulas P’07; and Caren Demoulas ’81, P’22; as well as six of their grandchildren who attended ɫռ. Frances D. Kettenbach P’02 was not able to attend the event. The family owns the Market Basket supermarket chain, an organization recognized for its close relationship with customers, staff, and community.

Home to the Chocolate Bar, the atrium is a central meeting place for ɫռ students, faculty, and staff. In her remarks, Caren Demoulas said the foundation chose the spot in honor of Telemachus and Irene.

“None of this would be possible without my parents, Mike and Irene, who were so proud to be connected with Boston College,” said Demoulas. “Seven of us attended ɫռ. The Demoulas Commons carries on my parents’ love and gratitude, particularly because it’s in a place used by so many.

“It’s fitting that it’s also a spot where people can grab a bite to eat and gather for conversation,” added Demoulas. “My parents were all about fostering community.”

University President William P. Leahy, S.J., thanked the Demoulas family for supporting Boston College’s commitment to the liberal arts and humanities through this meaningful space in ɫռ’s main humanities building.

Robert L. and Judith T. Winston Provost and Dean of Faculties David Quigley also offered remarks and thanked the Demoulas family for their generous support. Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences Dean Gregory Kalscheur, S.J., blessed the newly dedicated Demoulas Commons.
